Archives/Museum Endowment Fund

HSC Nurses Archive Endowment Fund

About the Fund

The Archives/Museum Collection Endowment Fund was established in 2008 by the Nurses’ Alumni Association of the Winnipeg General Hospital/Health Sciences Centre, in partnership with the Health Sciences Centre Foundation. The goal for the Fund is to provide monies for the professional management, preservation, and enhancement of the collections held in the HSC Archives/Museum in perpetuity. The Alumni Association, in partnership with the Foundation, is committed to raising awareness and encouraging charitable gifts to be directed to the Fund.

The Archives/Museum holdings, originally established by the Winnipeg General Hospital Nurses’ Alumni Association, include a significant collection supporting the history of nursing education and practice in Winnipeg, and a growing collection of records and artifacts related to the establishment and evolution of hospital-based health care in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada.  Essentially, the Fund is about making this significant 137-year-old story of health care, nursing, the establishment of institutional health care and its societal influence in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Western Canada more readily available to present and future generations for the purposes of knowledge transfer, research, education and sharing. Each year, local, national and international researchers from all disciplines and ages access records within the Collections housed in the Archives/Museum.

For many years, the Alumni Association maintained the Archives/Museum through the volunteer efforts of its members. A dedicated archivist position, on a three-year trial, was put in place in 2009, contributing significantly to growth, development and increased awareness of the Archival holdings throughout Health Sciences Centre. This position must be maintained, and neither the Alumni nor the Hospital has the funds to commit to this position.

Gifts made to the Archives/Museum Collection Endowment Fund will be held in perpetuity with the income being directed to sustain and grow the Archives/Museum Collection into the future. Winnipeg General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre Nurses Alumni Association members, patients and families, present and former hospital staff, physicians, academics, and all others interested in the history of healthcare are encouraged to contribute to the Fund as a way to ensure this incomparable legacy is available for the future.

"Preserving the archives ensures this significant story of nursing and the establishment of institutional health care in Winnipeg, Manitoba and indeed, Western Canada will be readily available to present and future generations of health care practitioners, other scholars, and members of the community for their research and education.”
- Jean Bissett, President, Nurses Alumni Association, 2007-2009

How to Contribute

There are many ways to contribute to the Archives/Museum Collection Endowment Fund.

         One-time Donation
May be cash or securities. Federal tax laws have made gifts of appreciated securities a very attractive, tax-effective way to make a charitable contribution.

          Planned Giving
Leave a Legacy by planning to make a difference with your gift through a bequest in your will or a gift of life insurance.

          Monthly Giving
One of the easiest ways to contribute is by becoming a monthly donor. Giving one month at a time makes it possible for donors who want to make a more substantial annual donation to do so without encountering cash flow hardships.

Gifts in honour, celebration or memoriam …or any special occasion.
