William S. Gardner

William S. Gardner, Head of the Labour and Employment Department, practices exclusively in the area of Labour and Employment Law.  Mr. Gardner was a Red River Scholar at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School and attended Princeton University graduating in 1970 with a B.A. in History.  He obtained his LL.B. from the University of Manitoba in 1973 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1976 and Manitoba in 1980.  He articled at Fraser and Beatty and the Ontario Labour Relations Board, practiced with McMillan Binch in Toronto and then joined Pitblado & Hoskin in 1980.

In 1998, he joined the combined firm of Pitblado Buchwald Asper, now known as Pitblado LLP.  Mr. Gardner has extensive experience in all aspects of Labour and Employment Law.  He has written and lectured extensively on a variety of labour relations and employment subjects relating to private and public institutions.  Mr. Gardner is Chair of the Engineering, Geosciences and Architecture Inter-Association Relations Joint Board.  He is Chair of the Manitoba Employers Council and advises the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce on labour relations and employment matters.

Mr. Gardner is a member of the Labour Management Review Committee.  He is the current Representative of the Province of Manitoba regarding NAFTA.  Mr. Gardner was Chair of the Minister of Health Advisory Committee on HIV for eight years.  He is active in fundraising for health and community related causes, including Foundations for Health.

Mr. Gardner is Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg. Mr. Gardner conceived and ran Flood Fite ’97, was a Co-Chair of the Friends of the ’99 Pan Am Games fundraising program and Chairperson of the corporate fundraising committee of the 2002 North American Indigenous Games.
