Discover 150 years of health care compassion, leadership and innovation

Did you know that the Winnipeg General Hospital (WGH) was established in 1872? Or that in 1973, when WGH merged with Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital -D.A. Stewart Centre (Respiratory Hospital), that Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg (HSC), was born?

These major milestones have shaped health care in Manitoba for well over a century while influencing health care advances throughout Canada and around the world. The early buildings are at the heart of a campus that has grown and evolved into the centralized location of the most specialized health services available in Manitoba. For more than 100 years, dedicated doctors, nurses, and other caregivers have offered healing and hope and have inspired the development of specialized services, the founding of training institutions, and the construction of countless modern health facilities.

In 1973, what we know as HSC Winnipeg was established on a strong foundation of compassion and innovation and has grown to become one of the largest tertiary health care facilities in Canada – a referral, teaching and research institution serving residents of Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut.

In 2000, HSC became an operating division of the WRHA and on April 5, 2019, HSC Winnipeg transitioned from WRHA to Shared Health, becoming the largest Shared Health facility.

Today, HSC is Manitoba’s provincial centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care, and hospital-based pediatric care and is the working home of thousands of staff, volunteers and benefactors who continue to support and grow services to meet the growing and evolving health care needs of our populations.

We invite you to discover more about the history of Manitoba’s provincial tertiary hospital and share your memories about visiting, working, and receiving care at HSC.
