After a motorcycle accident left him injured, nurse Brent Jason experienced firsthand the exceptional care provided by HSC’s Adult Emergency Department

Brent Jason is a nurse in the Pediatric ICU at the Children’s Hospital on the HSC campus, but in the summer of 2024, he found himself in HSC’s Adult Emergency Department after a motorcycle accident: “As soon as I arrived at HSC, I was so impressed with the way I was cared for.”
“I woke up on a board with a collar around my neck in the back of an ambulance. I was terrified,” says 43-year-old Brent Jason.
In the summer of 2024, Jason was participating in a motorcycle safety course in Winnipeg to learn how to safely operate a motorcycle ahead of a surfing trip to Bali. “I got the bike up to 40 kilometres an hour, and that’s the last thing I remember,” he explains.
According to bystanders, Jason lost control of his bike, hit a curb and he flew over the handlebars of the motorcycle, landing in a deep culvert that was holding several feet of water.
Jason was pulled out of the culvert by paramedics and transported by ambulance to HSC’s Adult Emergency Department. After being assessed he was administered pain medication before undergoing a CT scan and X-ray.
“As soon as I arrived at HSC, I was so impressed with the way I was cared for. Everyone from the unit assistants to imaging technicians, to nurses and residents gave me the most incredible care. It was gentle, it was compassionate, it was kind, and thorough,” he says.
Despite momentarily blacking out after the initial impact of the crash, Jason did not experience any head trauma. He was discharged five hours after arriving with only a minor injury to his shoulder, which required follow-up physiotherapy. What the emergency room staff didn’t know at the time was that Jason is also a dedicated member of the HSC team. As a paramedic-turned-nurse, Jason has been part of the HSC family for nearly a decade.
“I’ve always been proud to be a part of the HSC team, but after seeing firsthand the care patients receive, my pride has grown even stronger,” Jason says. “The staff here—every single one of them—does incredible work, and I’m so grateful.”
Jason has worked across several departments at HSC, including pediatric medicine and adult dialysis, but he ultimately found his calling in the pediatric Intensive Care Unit at HSC’s Children’s Hospital, where he works as a general nurse.
“I am extremely privileged to do the work that I do. I am invited into these families’ lives where their kid is very ill, and I get to offer my skills and compassion. It’s a beautiful moment and the rewards are endless,” he says.

Five weeks after his accident, and after undergoing an intense physiotherapy program, Jason was on a plane to Bali, excited to learn how to surf. Today he remains extremely grateful for the fast-acting and compassionate care of the professionals in HSC’s Adult Emergency Department.
“Despite the emergency room often being overwhelmed, the staff are still going above and beyond. They’re incredible at their jobs, and I’m so grateful that they are where they are, doing what they do,” he adds.
