The First Gift

July 24, 2024

“HSC has touched our family in many ways and we wanted to give back.”

Susan and Grant Broughton are proud donors of the HSC Foundation.

By the time the annual Innovation HSC Radiothon hit the airwaves on January 19, Susan and Grant Broughton had decided to become donors to the HSC Foundation. They made their first gift that day as thousands of Manitobans tuned in to hear stories about patients and staff at HSC.

“HSC has touched our family in many ways and we wanted to give back,” says Grant Broughton.

Grant has had a clean bill of health since 2018 following a years-long encounter with cancer. It started with the removal of a sarcoma from his leg which was followed later by a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He required chemotherapy and years of regular scans and appointments. He credits the personnel at HSC and CancerCare Manitoba for his recovery: “The medical staff I had were just tremendous. I can’t say enough about them,” says Grant, a retired liquor industry executive. “They worked together to come up with answers.”

As for Susan, she had minimally invasive surgery for a prolapsed uterus at HSC Women’s Hospital in May 2023. “They kept me just one night to monitor my blood pressure,” says Susan, a retired educational assistant. “My recovery was great.”

“Donations equip HSC’s people to do their best work. It could be you or a loved one who benefits,” says Susan Boughton.

The Broughtons’ relationship with HSC doesn’t stop at being former patients, they are also the parents of Dr. Jonathon Broughton who works in HSC’s Emergency Department.

“He was thinking about pursuing a career in surgery until he got his first taste of emergency medicine doing a rotation in HSC’s Emergency Department,” says Susan. “He changed course and loves his emergency work at HSC. He’s so happy to help others.”

Seeing how hard their son and his colleagues work; and benefitting themselves from the skill and devotion of HSC personnel, the Broughtons decided to support the HSC Foundation through the Radiothon.

“We know how hard all of these doctors, nurses, and other health care staff work,” says Grant. “When we contribute, we can all make sure that they have the most up-to-date equipment possible. It makes their jobs a little bit easier and it’s better for patients.”

“Donations equip HSC’s people to do their best work,” adds Susan in encouraging others to donate. “It could be you or a loved one who benefits.”
