Help the HSC Foundation Raise $250K to Purchase Equipment for HSC’s Adult Emergency Department

Total funds required: $250,000

HSC Winnipeg’s Adult Emergency Department is the busiest in Manitoba—there were nearly 58,000 visits to the department in 2023/2024. With so many seriously injured and very ill people coming to Emergency for life-saving care, it is essential that all equipment is in good working order and up to date.

“When the HSC Foundation and its donors step forward with support for the Emergency Department, our team knows that the community values their hard work and dedication under some of the most stressful circumstances imaginable.” –Dr. Chau Pham, Medical Co-Director, Adult Emergency Department, HSC

In conjunction with Savour New Zealand: Wine & Food Experience, presented by Garcea Group of Companies, the Health Sciences Centre Foundation is raising $250,000 to purchase new equipment for HSC’s Adult Emergency Department.

The desired equipment includes a specialized bedside monitor that assesses— in real time—the effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) being administered to patients experiencing cardiac arrest. “This is tremendous, game-changing technology,” says Dr. Chau Pham, Medical Co-Director, Adult Emergency Department. “When administering CPR, minutes matter. With higher quality CPR in the Emergency Department, we know we can save lives.”

“In Emergency, our equipment goes through a lot of wear and tear. Having new and advanced equipment is good for patient safety.” -Danica Zelenitsky, Charge Nurse, Adult Emergency Department, HSC

The Fund-A-Need campaign will also support the purchase of two new point-of-care ultrasound units. These powerful diagnostic tools are portable units that are used at the bedside to assess a patient’s condition. “That means patients don’t have to be moved to other parts of the hospital for further imaging,” says Dr. Pham. “From a patient safety perspective, this is essential, especially for unstable patients with low blood pressure.”

Other equipment that will be purchased with your support includes: an additional bedside monitor, a slit lamp for eye emergencies, and rapid infusers to support safer and more effective blood transfusions.

“Having new equipment ensures our nursing staff have greater access to learning supports that build their skills, expand their knowledge, and help them provide the best possible care.” -Trisha Knight, Director of Health Services, Adult Emergency Department, HSC

“Not only will having this new equipment save lives and improve the effectiveness of the Emergency Department,” says Dr. Pham, “it will be vital for the professional development of our nurses and for onboarding new personnel. Thank you for your support!”
