For many Manitobans with COVID-19, Jeffrey Castillo’s warm, empathetic face was the only face they saw as they recovered through the Virtual COVID-19 Outpatient Program (VCOP), a program that allows recovery at home, supported through tools and regular interaction with health care providers.

Jeff, who was encouraged by his mom to become a nurse, began his nursing career in the Philippines before moving to Canada. A nurse at HSC Winnipeg since 2017, he provided patient care on an adult trauma unit before transitioning to virtual care.

“In my opinion, doing virtual appointments with our patients helps them to feel more in charge of their care. They can meet us from the comfort of their own space. Being in familiar surroundings with support from their family is one of the best things for their mental well-being,” says Castillo.

Looking back on these past few years in health care, it is no wonder that Castillo chose the word resilience to define the career of nursing.
